SA vehicle sales on the up

Despite rising vehicle prices, last month saw a modest gain in new vehicle sales in South Africa with 49 499 vehicles leaving showroom floors in November 2011.

According to NAAMSA, November so a 11.7% improvement over the same period in 2010.NAAMSA expects growth over the medium term to be more subdued, in line with the overall performance of SA's economy.

DOMESTIC SALES

The vehicle exports market is bleak with November 2011 figures being 28.3% down on November 2010. Top performer in the export market was Toyota with 5250, followed by Volkswagen (4422) and Mercedes-Benz (4408).

Domestic sales saw Toyota dominate total sales with 11 419 vehicles. The Volkswagen group trails Toyota with 7503 units and GMSA comes in third with 5694 sales. Nissan sold 4105 vehicles while Ford sold 3748.

The top selling passenger vehicle in South Africa is Volkswagen Polo Vivo (2270) and while the top selling light commercial vehicle was Toyota's Hilux (4335).
