SA readies for new new Beetle
The newest "new" Volkswagen Beetle is open for ordering in Europe so, after its recent South African debut at the Johannesburg International Motor Show, when will it be available here?
The answer: From mid-2012 and the engine range at launch will include the 77kW 1.2 TSI and the 118kW 1.4 TSI, the latter with the option of seven-speed DSG.
Two equipment lines – Design and Sport – will be available to local buyers.
LOCAL REVEAL: The latest Beetle at its South African debut at the 2011 Johannesburg International Motor Show held earlier in October.
According to VWSA, the differences between the two will be mostly visible in the cabin. The dashboard of Design models will share the car’s exterior paint colour, while Sport models will have a carbon fibre-look panel within the dash and painted steering wheel spokes will also denote the equipment lines.
Specification levels are expected to be high with aircon, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, multifunction steering-wheels and fog lights.
Optional equipment is likely to include keyless entry, satnav, bi-xenon headlights and a sunroof and perhaps even the Fender sound pack, a 400W system plus sub-woofer developed along with the electric-guitar manufacturer. So, would you like to own the latest version of the iconic Beetle? so they will never again place that engine at the rear?

This is so niche market, I don't know why VW bothers with it. The design is crap, and just doesn't have the coolness of Cooper. I reckon the Up is more relevant as a true people's car, and the essence of beetle. Not just a big fat golf bug.

VW must keep on its getting closer to a 911 in looks, muy be eventually a poor mans Porsche.

I'm 63 years old and my 1st decent car was a 1960 Beetle, and I loved it. It took me from Cape Town on my very first leave right up to the Unfolozi river in KZN and around SA and back again, with not even a flat to worry about. The new Beetle looks great and if I could, I'd buy it. If you were a previous Beetle owner, it would appeal to you !

I would buy it, second hand, and never from a VW dealer. VW make nice cars, but so far, VWSA customer service still sucks....worst ever....and i'm still geting reports from Citigolf to GTi owners. VWSA need to start looking after customers...but then again, brand blind SA public will still buy VW.......

No buy for me either. The Beetle died a peaceful death and resurrecting something that looks like the original, just beefier, is just not on.

Funny thing is, a few people that saw it at Jims just love it. I would rather go for the Scirocco
