Toyota SA has released local prices for the eagerly anticipated 86 sports coupe that will be launched here from July 9, 2012.
The standard version of the 2+2 seater will be available at launch, while two high-spec versions will follow later in the month, the automaker said.
The standard model’s price starts at R298 500 while the 86 High manual will cost R329 400 and the High with a six-speed automatic, R346 500.
Standard features on the 86 High models include a Smart Start keyless entry system, leather and alcantara upholstery, climate control and 17” alloy wheels.
SUBARU, TOYOTA COLLABORATION
As for firepower, all 86s will be fitted with the new Subaru 2-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine that uses Toyota’s Direct Injection four-stroke petrol system and develops 147kW at 7000rpm and a peak torque figure of 205Nm from 6400 to 6600rpm. This engine is also common to Subaru’s BRZ.
Toyota SA is, understandably, excited about one of the most exciting models to hit its portfolio in a while.
Kerry Roodt, general manager for marketing communications, said: “The 86 is so much more than just another product, it signals a completely new direction for Toyota.
“Here you have a car that’s designed entirely around the driver; a car that exists purely for those who regard driving as a passion rather than a necessity. These cars have, of course, always existed, but for the first time Toyota is making this much automotive fun available to as wide an audience as possible – that’s genius!”
