Earlier in 2011 we reported on some rather questionable licence plates being available for purchase in the UK. In the US however, certain states have had to clamp down of dodgy vanity plates.
Over the past decade, Florida's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) has had to review more than 1800 requests for vanity plates due to questionable content.
The criteria for rejecting a plate is based on objectionable language, sexual connotations or racism. Judging by the image attached to the top of this story you can see just how much questionable content the DHSMV has had to filter.
REJECTED PLATES
Some of the rejected plates include - GOLF HOE, PER VERT and 1 OLD FRT. It's like barely-literate, flithy vehicular poetry; sure they're fun for a once-off laugh with your mates but we're pretty having VIBRTOR or HASAGUN plastered on your vehicle will do more harm than good.
With a plethora of saucy plates to review its not surprising that seemingly innocuous plates such as G8R H8R ("Gator Hater" or maybe its "Great Hater"?) are rejected as well.
When a driver applies for a vanity tag any plate design that is deemed too problematic is sent to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for review by a special committee.
Over the years, the department has turned down a host of plates deemed to obscene for the road.
"People are creative, I will say that," said Ann Howard, spokeswoman for the department.
