Porsche hat trick at '15 Car of the Year

THREE IN A ROW FOR PORSCHE: The new SA Car of the Year is the Porsche Macan S diesel - the company's third win in three years. Image: Porsche

The Porsche Macan S diesel has been named the 2015 South African Car of the Year by the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists - a hat trick for the German automaker.

The second win, in 2014, caused a stir among the industry; how this third win will go down with the industry remains to be seen.

The Macan was one of an original list of 40 cars, whittled down to 20 semi-finalists and eventually the 11 finalists. How the rest of the entrants fared points-wise will only be known in a couple of days but the final result was apparently very close with the top three separated merely be decimals.

The guild has run the competition since 1986.

The new A3, however, was the 2015 Wheels24 readers' Coty choice with 2211 votes in our homepage poll, up from 1885 garnered on Tuesday (March 17). The Macan garnered only 560 votes and was rated seventh out of the 11 finalists.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class (1749) and BMW's M4 (1540) finished in second and third respectively in the Wheels24 poll.

What do you think of the 2015 SA Car of the Year? Same corporate winner three years in a row! Email us and we’ll also publish your thoughts on Wheels24. Starting with...

Mathopi Graham: The Porsche Macan deserves its new status as Car of the Year.

Gerhard Nel: How many people can afford this car? An expensive car will have the best chance to win. Car of the Year must be an affordable car for the people.

Charles Honey: Fantastic car and a worthy winner!

Francois Potgieter: Bit unfair as few people can afford a Porsche. The competition should be judged on what the middle-class can afford :-)

Peter Corna: Surely there should be some kind of criteria relating to volume. Will we see 500 Macans sold in a calendar year? I doubt it. I'm sure the Old Guard of the guild must be extremely unhappy.

Peter Westmoreland: Well done Porsche! I have a Macan S and have done 20 000 km in it. An absolutely brilliant car - I could not be happier.

Gary Blake: Notwithstanding how good or not the Macan is, can you actually go to Porsche and buy one of these without waiting six months (or however long the waiting list is?) – forget it. Coty is losing its relevance I feel, despite the justifying logic that might be behind the process.

Morgan Reddy: Philip Higgo's mail on the deserved win by the Porsche Macan lacked facts or depth. If vehicles in Coty are judged in their class then how do you decide a winner across classes? The general outcry on this is surely an indication that the Coty competition should revisit its relevance to the target audience.
