In a display of awfully brazen branding, Porsche will now offer a limited edition, elaborately named Cayenne GTS Design Edition 3.
A dubious, albeit landmark venture, the Design Edition 3 marks the first time Porsche’s Design studio stylists have chosen to embellish an SUV model.
Previous Design studio works include the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 and the Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 – which begs the question, why did they not quit while they were ahead?
A disproportionate car to begin with, the Design Edition 3 package, with its 80s Japanese grey import graphics, stoops Cayenne aesthetics to a new low.
The Design Edition 3 package is finished in Lava Grey Metallic, splashed with special design stripes along the flanks and over the hood, along with special badging – the latter just in case you lose yours in amongst all the other Cayennes parked next to the Polo field.
Other cues to its pseudo-bespoke nature include 21-inch SportPlus wheels, whilst an extended roof spoiler is a no-cost option.
Interior embellishments are rather sparse, the cabin gets a glovebox badge bearing the series production number, which counts for something considering Porsche is only building 1 000 Cayenne GTS Design Edition 3 models - thankfully. The rest of the cabin is finished with touches of carbon-fibre trim, black leather and contrasting red stitching.
From an engineering perspective the Cayenne GTS Design Edition 3 runs Porsche’s 4.8l, direct-injection V8, producing 298kW (same as a standard 4.8 GTS) despite boasting a performance exhaust system. Drive to all-four wheels is via a six-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, and with ride height lowered 20mm handling should be incrementally sharper.
Despite the hugely contrived nature of the Design Edition 3 package at least you get a four-piece luggage set embossed with a Porsche Design Edition 3 label and a custom wristwatch to empress (dubiously) your employees and fellow golfers with.
