BMW used the sunlit stage of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy to present its 328 Hommage concept, an anniversary model in honour of the carmaker’s original 328 sports car.

Created for the occasion to celebrate the original 328’s 75th birthday, the concept shown in Italy draws heavily on the Vision ConnectedDrive roadster concept shown at this year’s Geneva Auto Show.

Mixing retro with futuristic, elements of the original 328 roadster have been updated and added to the concept. These include the heavily-chromed and slim double kidney grille, the alloy wheel design, double windscreen and leather straps running across the bonnet. The concept has no doors.

LOTS OF LEATHER

The 328 Hommage is powered by a three-litre straight-six engine and, in line with the original’s philosophy, has plenty of lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic for the exterior and interior.

The cabin also sees an abundance of leather and aluminium trim.

Karl Bäumer, CEO of BMW Group Classic, explained: “With the BMW 328 Hommage, we wish to pay homage to the passion and inventiveness of the fathers of the BMW 328. They created an icon considered a milestone in the history of the automobile.”
