The youth who allegedly killed a teenager and a mother when he drove into them in Alexandra, Gauteng has been charged with two counts of murder.
A police spokeswoman said a charge of culpable homicide was amended to two of murder in the Randburg Magistrate's Court.
He would also be charged with driving under the influence of alcolhol and without a valid licence.
She said the 16-year-old was being kept in a place of safety.
The amendment came after a second person died on Wednesday. "The lady with the small child has passed away," the spokeswoman said.
The name of the dead woman was not immediately available because police are still trying to notify her family. She was struck while carrying her baby on her back. Her son was also injured.
The Citizen reported the baby had a broken leg and bruises to his head and a hand but had been discharged from hospital.
Schoolgirl Mpho Nyembe was killed and another five children were critically injured. They are still being treated.
The car that ploughed into the group of people was allegedly being driven by a Highlands North Boys High School pupil. He had apparently taken his parents' car without their permission.
The case was postponed until November 11.
