Mitsubishi has used the sod-turning ceremony for a new Thailand plant as an opportunity to reveal plans for a global small car.
The new factory, one of three for Mitsubishi Motors Thailand in the Laem Chabang Industrial Estate in Chonburi province, about 100km from Bangkok, is planned to start mass-production from March, 2012.
It will build the new small car, which will compete in the one to 1.2-litre class and will be built on an all-new platform currently being developed by Mitsubishi Motors.
150 000 A YEAR
“Compactness, affordability and fuel efficiency” are the phrases being bandied about by Mitsubishi. The new car will be positioned as an entry-level model for a mix of emerging and advanced markets, the company said.
The initial output from the facility will be around 150 000 units a year, although the company hopes to increase this to 200 000.
