The Automobile Association's network of employers for traffic safety (Nets) to reduce traffic-related deaths has been endorsed by the Transport Minister, Sibusiso Ndebele.
Calling for South Africans to become more responsible on the roads, Ndebele welcomed the latest road safety initiative which, according to the Automobile Association (AA), emphasises road safety to and from work when walking and driving.
Ndebele urged a “shift from a culture of lawlessness to a new culture which values one's life and treasures that of others.
"Society must frown upon bad driving and report it. The road is a shared public space and the first place where we should exercise democracy. We must become more responsible on the roads.
“As South Africans, we must change our attitude towards road safety and stop the carnage on the roads,” Ndebele said. “We must create a new breed of road users in South Africa who will be at the forefront of a culture change which we must not only see but also all seek to become.”
The AA’s Nets programme provides companies with guidelines on how to implement road safety programmes in the workplace. It encourages the implementing of basic road safety policies such as banning cell phones when driving, wearing seatbelts and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy.
