Merc’s next generation engines

Although preliminary specifications were postulated during the CLS Shooting Break concept’s launch at Beijing three weeks ago, Mercedes-Benz has officially released data sets for its new generation direct-injection engines.

The two new engines cue competitive statistical outputs and staggering efficiency, Merc claiming reduced fuel consumption of 22- and 24% respectively for the V6 and V8 compared to the current 3.5l V6 and 5.5l V8 offerings.

Merc’s new 4.7l twin-turbo V8 engine will become available first. Customers should be able to order the new direct-injection engine on the CL- and S-Class models by fourth quarter this year.

Producing 320kW and 700Nm of peak rotational force, the new 4.7l V8 compares favourably to the current 5.5l V8, being 35kW more powerful and a boasting a significant 150Nm more rotational force.

The keener performance is even more impressive when the 4.7l V8’s 22% lower fuel consumption is factored into the equation.

Stuttgart’s new V6 offering still displaces 3.5l, yet the V-architecture is more open – angling a 60-degree cylinder bank interface instead of 90-degrees. Powering up to 225kW and 370Nm it bests the current 3.5l 90-degree V6 by 5kW and 20Nm.

The real gain is in terms of economy though, with the newer V6 being 24% more efficient.

Both the new engines employ stop/start technology, ancillary control units (which harmonise the water-, oil- and fuel pump operation) and intelligent generator management systems. Add up all these clever engineering details and it's easy to gauge how the efficiency improvements were archived. Nice to see the power is still there though.

Mercedes-Benz has not released a date or model for the debut of the new 3.5l V6 engine yet its safe to assume the entry level S-Class and nearly all E-Class bodystyles should offer it by the year’s end.
