Johannesburg - A man was killed while pushing his car on the eastbound section of the N17 freeway in Germiston on Thursday morning after it ran out of petrol, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

The 35-year-old victim and his passenger were pushing their Honda Ballade out of the middle lane near the Gosforth toll plaza when they were apparently struck by a green Mercedes Benz at 06:00, said spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

The man died on the scene.

No-one else was hurt.
