Man in court for selling licences

A 42-year-old man has appeared in the Bloemhof Magistrate's Court for licence fraud after he handed himself to police, Northern Cape police said.

Pieter Mahunonyane was allegedly an accomplice of David Watson, who was arrested in December, 2010 for selling learners' and drivers' licences. At the time, Mahunonyane's role in the matter was still being investigated.

Mahunonyane as released on R1000 bai until his next appearance on May 7, 2011.

DOCUMENTS COPIED

Watson, 53, had allegedly been receiving payment for issuing learners' licences since 2005. About 400 people from Kimberley paid between R2000 and R8000 for learners' and drivers' licences.

An accomplice allegedly obtained copies of identity documents and photographs from the licence applicants in Kimberley and then returned them to Bloemhof where the licences were issued, she said.

The fraud amounted to about R1-million.
