An assembly of 459 Mazda MX-5 roadsters on September 18 created the longest continuous parade of the iconic cars – and set a world record.
With 17 countries taking part in the event at the Unesco Zollverein World Heritage site in Essen, Germany, the former Guinness world record of 249 vehicles, set in New Zealand, was broken.
Jeff Guyton, president and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe, said: “More than 600 MX-5 owners applied to take part; so many that we didn’t have room for them all. The event, the parade, the many visitors – Mazda MX-5 showed today why it’s still the world’s best-selling roadster.”
2800km from Moscow
SOS Children’s Villages received €3000 in donations. The last seats at the MX-5 world parade were auctioned off at eBay, raising €1300, which Mazda Germany increased to €3000.
Most of the cars that took part were from Germany but a group of nine Russian MX-5ers travelled the furthest to the parade – 2800km from Moscow.
Other awards included one for the oldest MX-5 (a car from Prague that was 21 years and two months old), the MX-5 with the highest mileage (a Swiss car with 344 624km on the clock) and the most beautiful MX-5 at the Beauty Parking location.
A brand-new 20th Anniversary Edition MX-5 was handed over to the lucky winner of Mazda’s online draw before to the event.
