London to Cape Town in record time

A team of three drivers are on the third leg of their race from London to Cape Town. Their challenge? To beat a 13-day record and raise money for a charity.

Led by adventurer Mac Mackenney, the team started from the RAC Club in London on Saturday, October 16, and will cover nearly 170 00 km through 20 countries.

The team will attempt to beat a record of 13 days, 8 hours and 48 minutes for the drive from London to Cape Town – all to raise money and awareness for charity Help for Heroes.

The team will be travelling in a Land Rover Discovery 2 and will be using Havoline products supplied by Chevron.

Eric Jackson holds the previous record from 1963, when he raced the distance in just over 13 days in a Ford Cortina GT. Mackenney’s team want to manage it in under 13 days.

The patron for the attempt is Sir Stirling Moss and the honorary patron is Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Fiennes said he wished the team all the best in the world and was confident that Mackenney would be prepared for any scenario on route.

“Where you think there will be the biggest problem there won’t be and where you don’t think there will be a problem, there will be. Mac prepares for the worst case scenario based on the philosophy that prevention is better than cure,” he said.

The charity, Help for Heroes is a support network for men and women wounded in the line of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

By Tuesday, the team were travelling across Syria. Use this interactive map to follow their progress and receive regular updates.
