Limited edition farewell for S2000

Honda’s award winning S2000 will go into its end of production cycle soon with an Ultimate Edition swansong.

The Japanese engine builder’s 40th anniversary celebration model will close the Honda rear-wheel drive performance chapter for a while. Tumbling car sales have already culled the second generation NSX and any hope of an S2000 replacement.

Fans of the madcap roadster - which goes out of production in June this year – will have option on the Ultimate Edition, featuring classic white and red Honda performance colours.

Honda will showcase the Ultimate Edition (mechanically identical to a standard S2000) at the Geneva motor show on the third of March.

Distinguishing the last of the S2000s will be a white exterior contrasted with red leather interior and – wait for this – red stitching on the gear lever gaiter. Cynics aside, the colour scheme does have heritage, it was first used on Honda’s 1964 F1 car.

Unique S2000 black badging and darker shade mags will ensure those limited edition numbered plaques on the kickplates are not easily misconstrued.

With its redoubtable 2l engine (which won engine of the year five times in its category) and lively rear-wheel drive handling the S2000 has stayed uncannily current over the last 10 years. It says much for the fundamental ‘correctness’ of the original design.
