LEAF to earn its racing stripes

Nissan’s electric LEAF is set to compete is in the 89th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Production Class for electric vehicles with Nissan’s veteran off-road truck racing champion Chad Hord behind the wheel.

Apart from the addiction of a roll-cage, racing seats and safety harness, the car will remain relatively untouched when it heads up the hill powered by a lithium-ion battery and an 80kW AC synchronous motor capable of producing 280Nm of torque.

Since it produces no emissions, or noise, spectators will have to watch out as the LEAF makes the climb in near silence.

'FUN TO DRIVE'

Ron Stukenberg, marketing communications manger at Nissan Motorsport, says the event will showcase electric vehicles' performing in environments outside city driving.

“This is another innovative way to show the fun-to-drive nature of the Nissan LEAF and highlight that 100% electric vehicles perform very well in demanding situations such as Pikes Peak.”

Stukenberg adds that the Japanese battery car is fun to drive and will do well around the bends of the climb.

“The instant torque available from the electric motor makes the LEAF a fun car to drive and the abundance of corners on the climb will give Chad a chance to take advantage of that torque.”
