Korean star US Car of the Year

DETROIT, Michigan - Hyundai's Elantra is the 2012 North American Car of the Year following news that the Range Rover Evoque is the Truck of the Year.

The winners were revealed at the Detroit auto show after being chosen by a jury of 50 automotive journalists from the US and Canada.

The awards recognise the most outstanding new or substantially changed vehicles of the year, benchmarking them in their segments based on factors such as innovation, design, handling, driver satisfaction and value for money.

The Elantra is currently (Jan 12, 2012) leading the Wheels24 SA Car of the Year readers' poll with 4235 votes with Ford's Focus second on 3658 votes.

THE COMPETITION


On December 15, 2011, the three car and three truck finalists were announced and jurors gave the Elantra 174 points, the Volkswagen Passat 161 and the Ford Focus 155 it was revealed this week.

It is the second win for Hyundai. The Genesis won in 2009 while the Sonata was one of three finalists in the 2011 contest.

The 2011 North American Car of the Year was the Chevrolet Volt.

Last year’s 2011 North American Truck of the Year was the Ford Explorer.

The winner of the 2012 SA Car of the Year contest, in which the Hyundai Elantra is a finalist, will be announced in March, 2012.
