Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg will receive 20% to 40% of the income from street parking, Business Day reported.
The percentage would depend on whether a suburb had the potential for higher or lower income. The rest of the money generated would go to contractor Ace Parking.
R8.50 AN HOUR
Kerbside parking is running in Braamfontein and the adjacent Johannesburg CBD. Ace Parking plans to spread to Norwood, Melville, Brixton, Emmarentia, Rosebank, Roodepoort, Birnam, Parkview, Sandton, Florida, Fordsburg, Greenside, Linden, Rivonia, Craighall Park and Northcliff on June 1.
Kerbside parking cost R8 an hour but will rise to R8.50 on July 1.
Many of the businesses in these suburbs had slid into decline in recent years and residents and business owners claimed the introduction of paid parking would drive customers away.
