Italy ups speed limit to 150km/h

2010-07-29 08:53

The spiritual home of the supercar, Italy, has hiked its highway speed limit.

The Italian parliament has ratified a law amendment raising the Autostrade’s speed limit to 150km/h.

Traditionally the nation fabled for its supercars (Ferrari, Maserati, Pagani and Lamborghini) had enforced a 130km/h ceiling on its freeway network.

Italian parliamentary members have now sanctioned a change that should allow certain portions of the Autostrade to become 150km/h zones.

Part of the new set of Italian transportation policies voted into action is a very strict new drinking and driving law.

Stipulations require that drivers between the ages of 18 and 21 (and all bus, taxi or commercial truck drivers) are not allowed to have any traceable amount of blood alcohol when driving.

Are these Italian transport policy measures prudent though?

That's what should be done in SA,cause frankly,a lot of people are driving that speed on SA highways anyway.

I'm moving!! Seriously though, all they are doing is legalising the speed everbody there drives at anyway. Have you ever heard of anyone famous being pulled over for speeding in Italy? Try speeding in France or England and see what happens.

At last there's a glimmer of sense on the road. On the subject of Britain (Mr BMW 16), I have done a lot of travelling on the normally heavily over-populated motorways in the UK and there's clear evidence that the police do actually use their kops. Provided your lane discipline is good and you keep a reasonable distance, they seem to regard 90 mph as acceptable. In the W Cape by contrast, there are many two and even three lane roads that carry an utterly stupid 60 km/h limit and which attract vultures with speed cameras usually placed on down hill sections. Utterly pathetic fund raising tactics do NOTHING to promote road safety.

Now here's a reason to emmigrate, Wish our speedlimits could be higher, but allas our drivers are not up yo standard, Love the idea that zero alcahol is allowed.

Woooow!!! at least we read of a country that's going forward, unlike some nanny states that copy everything that Britain says is good!
