ATLANTA, Georgia - Ignition devices that won't allow a vehicle's engne to start if the person in the driving seat has been drinking alcoho have apparently reduced unsober driving in the USA.l
There intention, according to a study, is to reduce the number of serial D&D offenders.
Re-arrest rates for alcohol-impaired driving fell by 67% after the ignition interlocks were installed, researchers at the Community Guide branch of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
Around 200 000 vehicles in the US have the device.
WORKING WELL
Randy Elder, scientific director for systematic reviews at Community Guide, said: "The very strong indication is that ignition interlocks work extremely well. We need to have more people use them."
Annually about 1.4-million people are arrested for DUI offences in the US and a million convicted. The devices are typically mounted on the fascia and have a tube into which the driver blows to analyse how many drinks he's had.
Typically, their installation is part of a sentencing requirement.
Alcohol was involved in nearly 11 000 deaths in the US in 2009, about one-third of all traffic deaths.
