Hyundai hard sell on fuel cell

GOING WELL: Hyundai has promised a 650km range for the Tucson Fuel Cell Electric SUV when it goes into production in 2015.

Hyundai will start testing its Tucson ix Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) in 2011 with the intention of going to mass-production in 2015.

The Tucson ix FCEV is Hyundai’s third-generation FCEV. building on the original 2005 Tucson FCEV that was a test vehicle for the company’s second-generation hydrogen fuel-cell. The latest version has a 100kW fuel-cell system and two hydrogen storage tanks said to give the SUV a range of 650km - 70% better than the previous version.

It can also start in temperatures as low as -25°C.

SMALLER FUEL CELL

Top speed is still 160km/h, but using less hydrogen. Reports say this was made possible by shrinking the overall volume of the fuel cell system by 20%.

South Africa doesn't even have an excuse for a hydrogen refuelling network, so we'll again be left out in the cold, as we are with superclean diesel, high-speed internet and even a decent bus service.

Santa... are you listening?
