The US government is investigating 2007-2008 model year Hyundai Elantra compact cars after receiving reports of engine stalling.
The preliminary investigation involves about 167,000 Elantras. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received four reports of engine stalling because of problems with the fuel pump module.
One owner says the vehicle stalled in the fast lane of a three-lane highway and caused a crash involving three cars and one injury. All four of the reports involved cars with low mileage.
Hyundai spokesman Miles Johnson said Monday it is too early in the process to draw any conclusions about the alleged safety issue. He says Hyundai is cooperating with NHTSA on the investigation.
