Hybrids pass another milestone

Toyota delivered its 400 000th hybrid in Europe in January 2012, a British-built Auris Hybrid - the automaker's first hybrid power vehicle to be built in Europe.

Tony Walker of Toyota UK said: “We will receive significant further investment to build a new generation of Toyota C-segment hatchbacks – including a hybrid."

BIGGER RANGE

Michel Gardel, a spokeman for Toyota Europe, said: "We are very proud to have delivered our 400 000th hybrid in Europe. It shows  Europe's customers are not only ready to consider a hybrid but have been doing so in large numbers – 10% of our sales in Europe in 2011 were hybrids."

Toyota has sold more than 3.5-million hybrids worldwide and so claims to have avoided dispersing more than 23-million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Toyota will significantly increase its range of hybrid vehicles through 2012 with the introduction of a seven-seat Prius+ and Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The new Yaris will have a hybrid version.
