How to disconnect young drivers?

A US safety agency is exploring ways to get younger (and future) drivers to disconnect from their mobile devices when driving.

The US’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expressed this aim an automotive technology conference held recently in Michigan.

Bloomberg reports that the NHTSA administrator David Strickland said the US Transportation Department (which oversees the safety agency’s operations) has begun developing guidelines for in-car systems used in that country. These will be published later in 2011.

'A CAR IS A CAR...'

"I'm not going to deny the fact that people want these things (connection to their mobile devices when driving)," Strickland said. "They're used to being connected 24 hours a day."

Strickland added: “A car is not a mobile device. A car is a car. We (the NHTSA) will not take a backseat while new telematics and infotainment systems are introduced. There is too much potential for distraction of drivers."

But, he added, the agency was looking for ways to tell these drivers “it's OK to not be connected when you're operating a car”.
