Honey trap: This camera pays YOU!

Video: Lottery speed camera

We've all been there... driving along, you suddenly notice a speed camera's tell-tale flash. You instinctively slow down but in the back of your mind you know you're going to be sent a speeding notice courtesy of the traffic department.

The dreaded speed camera has long since been a rather lucrative form of visual speed enforcement but now an entrant in the Volkswagen Fun Theory campaign has come up with a novel method of speed enforcement: A traffic camera that rewards you for sticking to the speed limit.

FIRST PRIZE

The concept is simple: the camera shows your current speed and whether you were exceeding the limit. Afterwards your licence plate is entered into a lottery and one responsible driver is rewarded with a cash prize.

Kevin Richardson's idea won first prize and VW thought it was such a good one that the automaker made his concept a reality with a camera installed in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

As a further incentive to stick to the speed limit, Richardson suggested that speeding fines go towards the lottery.

According to Volkswagen, the lottery camera reduced the average speed of traffic by 7km/h.

We're pretty sure the idea would work wonders in SA but we can't help wonder where the local traffic cops would get their Christmas bonsella from.
