The personal mobility market, dominated by Segway’s two-wheeled wonder and mobility scooters, has received a new contender as Honda unveils its new Uni-Cub.
The new model is an evolution of the U3-X personal mobility concept device revealed in 2009. The Uni-cub features a compact design with riders seated on a saddle and controlling movement by shifting their weight.
INSPIRED BY ASIMO?
The Uni-cub is powered by a Lithium-ion battery capable of a maximum speed of 6km/h and a 6-km range. The battery requires approximately two hours to recharge.
The model features Honda’s Omni Traction Drive System and the technology behind the Uni-cab was inspired by robotic technologies developed for Asimo, Honda’s world-famous humanoid robot.
Riders control speed, directions and brakes by shifting their weight. The model also has a touch panel control via smartphone and allows for other devices to be connected. If you've been skipping gym, the Uni-cab won't be for you as it has a weight restriction of between 40-100kg and requires riders of 150-190cm in height.
The Uni-Cub's compact saddle-style design allows the rider’s legs to reach the ground while maintaining eye-level height with other pedestrians.
Honda will be testing its new model from June 2012 to March 2013.
