Habig takes to Fiesta S2000

2012-02-06 10:10

PLUS ONE: Jan Habig and Robert Paisley have confirmed their seats for the 2012 S2000 rally championship.

2012’s going to be big for six-time South African rally champion, Jan Habig, and his co-driver, Robert Paisley. The pair, along with securing a new sponsorship deal, will also be competing for a brand-new team.

The pair, which parted ways with Volkswagen Motorsport at the end of 2011, will share a new Ford Fiesta S2000 in the new season and they’ll compete under the banner of local construction company Basil Read when the season kicks off with the Total Tour Natal from March 23 – 24, 2012.

Habig ended his 20-year association with Volkswagen in 2012, only saying he would not be retiring from rallying.

The veteran won his first SA title in 1997 and has a staggering 26 rally wins to his name. Paisley won the national co-driver’s championship alongside Serge Damseaux in 2003 and 2004 and has notched up 21 rally wins in his career, in addition to winning the Africa Rally championship with Johnny Gemmell in 2002.

Habig and Paisley’s is the second Fiesta S2000 to rally in Basil Read colours, joining Charl Wilken and Greg Godrich who have carried the livery for the past two seasons and will continue doing so in 2012.

Habig said: “I am also pleased we will have Charl (Wilken) and Greg (Godrich) as teammates, as they already have two years’ experience with the Fiesta.

“Our new car should arrive in South Africa from Ford M-Sport next month (February, 2012) so that we have sufficient time to prepare for the season opening event at the end of March.”
