A Korean grandmother has taken the expression “never give up”’ to a new level by trying to pass her driving test 959 times over more than five years.

Then, on try number 960, Cha Sa-soon (69) finally made it, according to The Telegraph. She’s been taking the test three or four times a week since April 2005.

The dogged driving granny said she wanted her licence so she could take her grandchildren to the zoo.

Her driving instructor, Park Su-yeon, said passing her test was cause for celebration because nobody had had the heart to tell her to quit.

“When she finally got her licence,” he said, “we all went out cheering and hugged her, giving her flowers. It felt like a huge burden falling off our back. We didn’t have the guts to tell her to quit because she kept showing up.”

Su-yeon added that, despite her many failed tests, his pupil wouldn’t be a danger on the roads – it was her written test that was the problem. Now she’s become a national celebrity and is appearing in an advertisement for Hyundai products.

And, as a final twist, her surname means “vehicle” in the Korean language.
