LICENCE SCAM EXPOSED? Officials say there could be a large-scale driving-licence scam operating in Gauteng and believe tow-truck drivers are involved.

JOHANNESBURG - Three tow truck drivers have appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court in connection with forged driving licences.

They were released pending the completion of an investigation into tow-truck drivers, community safety spokesman Thapelo Moiloa said.

"We cannot keep them in custody for ever," the spokesperson said, "but while they are free they are not allowed to drive any vehicle. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, they will be charged accordingly."

The men were arrested in an operation on the East Rand on February 15.

Moiloa said: "Various defects were noted on their licences. The receipt number and licence numbers did not correspond and date of issue was October 1, 2021."

More arrests were imminent as the arrest of the three provided links to a bigger scam in Gauteng.

"Police are looking for three men."

Towing companies have given their full support and were willing to screen their drivers, Moiloa added.
