GT3 RS Autobahn crash claims two

A driver and his wife were killed when the Porsche 911 GT3 RS they were travelling in crashed into a tree on the A3 Autobahn near Düsseldorf.

The accident happened at 11:00am on Tuesday morning, when the 39-year old driver of the GT3 RS lost control at high speed.

Witnesses report the green Porsche 911 GT3 RS was travelling at high speed before suddenly careering off the road and crashing into a tree. Both the driver and his 40-year old wife died on impact.

One of the best...

The 911 GT3 RS is one of the world’s most extreme performance cars, built primarily as a trackday tool for discerning enthusiasts.

Porsche’s most extreme 911 model is recognisable by its widebody fenders (rendering a wider track for better stability), bookshelf sized carbon-fibre rear wing and 1970s styled side graphics.

Mechanically the 911 GT3 RS runs 325/30 ZR high performance tyres at the rear and is powered by a 331kW 3.8l flat-six engine. It also features a redoubtable braking system, gaining much engineering integrity from Porsche’s racing programme.

Unfortunately all these features, which combine to make the 911 GT3 RS’s road holding practically peerless on a public road, were not enough to save the lives of its occupants.

The car’s roll-cage had little effect on cushioning the blow, as one can see from the crash images – where the body structure has been nearly unrecognisably compromised…

This tragic state of affairs again highlights how driving errors of judgement can usurp the dynamic talents of even the best performance car.
