General Motors confirmed that it will put an electric Cadillac coupe, the ELR, into production.
The ELR will be the company's second extended-range vehicle, following the Chevrolet Volt, which went on sale in December 2010.
The vehicle will be based on the Converj concept that was said to have impressed critics at the 2009 North American International Auto Show.
Like the Volt, the ELR will come with a battery and a backup petrol engine that will power the car once the electric charge is depleted.
GM used the ELR name to conform to Cadillac's three-letter naming convention.
The company said performance, pricing and timing details of the ELR will come at a later date.
Another Cadillac concept will be revealed at the ongoing Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in California, which ends on August 21, 2011.
