The Retail Motor Industry has launched a vehicle safety check campaign to ensure vehicles are roadworthy before they take to the roads this holiday season.
Free vehicle safety checks will be conducted from November 22 to December 4, 2010 at a selection of private and municipal test stations.
Safety items that will be checked include lights and indicators, seat belts, windscreen wipers, tyres, front, rear and emergency brakes, steering mechanisms, front and rear suspension, wheel alignment and exhaust systems.
RMI CEO Jeff Osborne has also appealed to testing stations not affiliated to the RMI to support the campaign.
“We would like to check as many vehicles as possible,” Osborne asked. “The aim is to help to reduce the high level of road deaths and injuries that occur over (the festive) period.”
In a similar campaign held ahead of this year’s Easter holiday, 78% of vehicles tested were found to have critical defects requiring repairs.
