Ford Focus gets in SYNC with MS

Ford has promised unrivalled digital device and control convergence when it rolls out the brand’s latest SYNC functionality with the all-new Ford Focus, set for launch in 2012.

Ford boss Alan Mulally sees SYNC as "a smarter, safer and simpler way to connect drivers with in-car technologies and their digital lives".

At his previous position as Boeing's CEO, Mulally was instrumental in developing better integrated digital cockpit technologies for aircraft.

MICROSOFT POWERED

Driving SYNC’s digitisation is a Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive platform, something Ford promises will have the ability to recognise 10 000 commands in 19 European languages, with a high degree of language, accent and vernacular text message acronym deciphering capability too.

The only languages currently catered for outside of Europe are Japanese, Korean Arabic.

SYNC aquires media via USB ports, MP3 players, an SD-card port and RCA audio and video inputs. Online connectivity is facilitated by a portable USB modem or smart phone.

A neat feature is SYNC’s ability to convert a single point of online connectivity to full in-car WiFi, capable of serving a complement of five passengers and their individual online needs.

Ford anticipates that nearly two million new vehicles in Europe will hve the system by 2015, making a major contribution to the use of in-car technology alongside customer convenience.

Cognisant of the importance of seamless digital interfacing, especially with the proliferation of smart phones, Ford’s banking on its new Focus, armed with SYNC, to provide a strong market alternative to VW’s all-conquering Golf6.

Ford has sold nearly three-million vehicles equipped with its SYNC system since if was introduced in 2007.
