Fleeing bus takes cop for ride

HANOI, Vietnam - A Vietnamese traffic cop went on a wild ride in Hanoi, clinging to the windscreen wipers of a moving bus for nearly a kilometre after the rogue driver tried to avoid arrest.

Traffic officer Nguyen Manh Phan ordered the driver to stop the 39-seat coach but he refused to show his paperwork and drove off. Phan leaped on to the front and held on despite the bus reaching 50km/h.

A YouTube video shows the officer trying to get his footing and dangling precariously from the moving bus as oncoming traffic rides past. Phan can be heard yelling, "Call the police!"

The driver, Phung Hong Phuong, eventually stopped after being chased by police and local people. Even with the bus stopped, Phan stood calmly in front of it, still hanging on to the wipers.

Phuong was arrested for acting against a public official, an offence that carries a three-year jail term. He previously served nearly four years for a fatal traffic accident.
