Flashed driver walks into trap

A 25-year-old driver was arrested when he turned back on a freeway to see what caused a mysterious flash.

It was a speed camera that caught him allegedly driving at 163km/h on the N1 freeway in Midrand early on Sunday morning, Johannesburg metro police said. Police manning the camera immediately arrested him.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said: "The driver of the silver Ford Fiesta seemed surprised when he was flashed by the speed camera driving at 163km/h and turned back to investigate where the light came from.

"He found that the camera had been set up by metro police who were on the spot. They arrested him for speeding.

RELEASED ON BAIL

Earlier a 37-year-old man was arrested for driving his BMW at 214km/h on the same stretch of road. He told police he had been ata party in Johannesburg and was rushing home because his wife wanted to know why he was out in the early hours of the morning.

The two were among 13 people arrested for speeding during an operation run from 9pm on Saturday night to 4am on Sunday.

Both were released on R500 bail and were expected to appear soon in the Randburg Magistrate's Court.
