Fiat’s 1.4l MultiAir turbo was named the Best New Engine of the Year at the 12th annual International Engine of the Year Awards, held in Stuttgart on Wednesday.
Mercedes-Benz broke the awards embargo earlier on Wednesday by announcing it had won the coveted Performance Engine of the Year award with its AMG-designed 6.2l V8. Fiat’s innovative technology carried the day, though.
The MultiAir concept was lauded by judges as being the greatest innovation in engine technology seen during the past year.
Fiat’s mechanical engineering breakthrough employs an electrohydraulic system to independently control each of the four cylinders inlet air charge. It does without a throttle valve.
Coupled with direct injection and forced induction the MultiAir system is able to produce strong performance, low emissions and amazing economy from a relatively small swept capacity.
In terms of manufacturer representation, BMW scooped three of the 11 available awards, with Mercedes-Benz taking two. Fiat, VW, Toyota, Audi and BMW/PSA each won a single category.
The category winners were:
Best New Engine: Fiat 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo
Green Engine: Toyota 1.8-litre hybrid
Performance Engine: Mercedes AMG 6.2-litre
Sub 1-litre: Toyota 1-litre
1-litre to 1.4-litre: Volkswagen 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger
1.4-litre to 1.8-litre: BMW/PSA 1.6-litre turbo
1.8-litre to 2.0-litre: BMW 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel
2.0-litre to 2.5-litre: Audi 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo
2.5-litre to 3.0-litre: BMW 3.0-litre twin-turbo
3.0-litre to 4.0-litre: BMW 4.0-litre V8
