'False plates' cop for promotion?

PRETORIA - An Independent Complaints Directorate probe into claims of criminal conduct by Tshwane metro's deputy police chief Ndumiso Jaca is continuing.

"I think we will wrap it up in a month or so," ICD spokesman Moses Dlamini said. "Our time line largely depends on the level of co-operation we get from everybody involved. We want to speak to all the parties."

THREE YEARS' JAIL

Dlamini declined to say whether Jaca was co-operating with the police watchdog's investigators.

Displaying false number plates is punishable by a fine or jail term of up to three years.

In October, Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa put Jaca on three month's special leave amid allegations that he used the same number plate for his motorcycle and his car. He is also being investigated by the Road Traffic Management Corporation and faces an internal investigation by the Tshwane Metro.

Municipal manager Jason Ngobeni, who is leading the city's probe, was "not available for comment".

On September 16 the case was also reported to the Alberton police station by the Justice Project SA in terms of Section 68 of the National Road Traffic Act 1996. The SA Police Service has handed the matter to the ICD.

JPSA spokesman Howard Dembovsky said his organisation had supplied its findings to the ICD.

TOP-JOB CANDIDATE

Jaca was one of four candidates short-listed to be interviewed on Monday for the position of Tshwane metro police chief but Metro spokesman Pieter de Necker said it was not certain when the metro would reveal who had got the job.

Dembovsky said Jaca should not have been shortlisted while he was under investigation for a criminal offence.
