Europe cracks down on negligence

Cross-country travel is not too trying for Southern Africans, who have to deal with the occasional speeding fine, but spare a thought for some poor European drivers and the level of Orwellian control authorities are now wielding there.

Cross-border travel in Europe can work out rather expensive, especially since a European Union directive in March, 2011 that allowed member countries to share driver information.

EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said: "Foreign drivers account for five percent of traffic on Europe's roads but 15% of offences. If you are that driver, I have bad news. It's about to stop."

GO BY TRAIN

Although different countries have varying rules on what is required to be kept in your car, failing to carry a reflective vest, a warning triangle and spare light bulbs can cost you dearly – as much as €90 (about R900). In France, your driving licence or vehicle could be confiscated.

Little wonder, then, that low-cost airlines and high-speed rail often seem like more-attractive options…

Cars in southern Africa are required to carry a reflective warning triangle (which few car owners bother with) but are there any other safety essentials we are overlooking?
