'End SA road carnage' - Ndebele

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has made a fresh call for an end to the carnage on South Africa's roads.

Speaking during a debate on his department's 2011/12 budget, he told MPs that 14 000 people died and tens of thousands were injured on the country's roads every year.

"Worldwide, 1.3-million people are killed annually; 14 000 are killed in South Africa and more than 50 000 injured."

Ndebele said South Africa was a participant in the recently launched United Nations' Decade of Action for Road Safety campaign. "We seek to halve the deaths by 2015."

In terms of the campaign, all provinces must report monthly on their accident rate and take strong enforcement measures.

"It was agreed by all that at least a million drivers would be stopped each month; 250 000 will be stopped every week, 45 000 each day. Something must be done to end the lackadaisical approach to road safety," he added.

The targets would ensure that at least half the drivers in South Africa would be stopped over the next six months and checked for compliance with road traffic regulations.
