Electrifying speed record attempt

Speed junkie Don Wales and his electric Bluebird will push for yet another UK land speed record in August, 2011 as they take to the beaches of South Wales.

After an aborted attempt in June, 2011 Wales and his team will return to Pendine Sands over August 13/14 to continue testing with the ultimate goal of breaking 500mph (805km/h barrier in 2013.

NOT THE FIRST

While August’s runs remain a test, timekeepers will be present as the team attempts to set a new UK land speed record for an electric car.

It will not be the first land speed record set at Pendine in a Bluebird: Wales’ grandfather, Sir Malcolm Campbell, and uncle, Donald Campbell, previously beat the clock there.

Sir Malcolm set his first record of 146.16mph (235.2km/h in a Bluebird in September, 1924. He went on to break the speed record another eight times, including a 301.12mph (485kph) run on Utah’s Bonneville salt flats.

His son, Donald, continued the family tradition, clearing 400mph (644kph) in a turbine-powered Bluebird on Lake Eyre, Australia in 1964.

Wales holds a world land speed record, two American national records and eight UK records.
