The car described by Enzo Ferrari as "the world’s most beautiful" celebrated its 50th birthday in style at the home of Britain’s Formula 1 GP.
As part of a Silverstone Classic weekend Jaguar clubs from across the UK descended on the circuit to showcase William Lyons’s greatest creation.
In the leading 50th anniversary event for the iconic sports car, more than 1000 E-Types were on site and, on Saturday, more than 800 took part in a special parade on the full 5.9km GP circuit, forming the most elegant traffic jam in history.
The final number of cars in the parade has been sent to Guinness World Records and the probable record outcome is expected to be confirmed soon.
LEAPING CATS EVERYWHERE
Supporting the headlining E-type activities, thousands of classic cars from hundreds of brands packed Silverstone. Among the many other Jaguars on show were C-Types, D-Types, XK120s, XK140s, XK150s and even more contemporary models such as the XKR.
On the track, a record grid of 52 racing E-Types contested a round of the E-Type Challenge, a special race series created for 2011 to mark the anniversary year. The race was won by Jon Minshaw with a classy performance to stay ahead of Alex Buncombe and Graeme Dodd.
"This weekend has been a fantastic celebration of the E-Type," said event director, Nick Wigley. "Cars from all over the world came to Silverstone to make the Silverstone Classic the biggest and best anniversary event for the cars."
The gathering was particularly poignant as the first customer E-Type was delivered to a British customer in same summer month exactly 50 years ago.
