Drunk fare takes taxi to disaster

Taxi drivers often have to put up with inane directions from passengers who are all too often inebriated but what do you do when one such is threatening violence?

Like this taxi driver in China who drove down a steep mountain stairway after being "persuaded" to do so by a drunk passenger.

Xiao Cheng, after taking directions from his legless passenger, became stuck halfway down the steps in Quanzhou at 5am.

He claimed the fare insisted he drive down the stairs and even threatened violence if he didn't. So, not wanting his face mashed, Cheng drove his cab as cautiously as he could down the steep path but ultimately became wedged on the staircase.

"He insisted on me driving directly down the stairs, he said his home was down there. You can't imagine how scared I was but the man, who had a long scar on his arm, threatened to beat me up."

Cheng said that once it became clear the car was immobile the passenger became furious and demanded compensation. Not wanting to a fist-fight Cheng handed over his takings and the drunk staggered off.

Locals tried to help Cheng but a crane had to be called to lift the cab to safety.
