Driver aces get-out-of-jail card

It seems all you need to stay out of jail for serious motor offences in Britain is to be fat and sick.

A killer motorist called Kevin Bracken with 50 driving convictions who "deserves to go to prison", the London Daily Mail reports, has avoided imprisonment because he is both. A judge, despite criticising the fat man's driving record as "the worst he's ever seen", said his hands were tied.

According to the Daily Mail, the judge said Bracken had a “complete disregard for the law” and deserved a lengthy jail term.

DANGER BRACKEN

His latest offence? On January 21, 2011, Bracken led police officers on a six-kilometre chase during which he performed U-turns and sped through two red lights while speeding on the wrong side of a dual carriageway. He eventually crashed into a traffic island, before slipping into the passenger seat in an attempt to convince police the driver had fled the vehicle; but the driver’s door was jammed.

Bracken pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

Judge Morris told him: “You deserve to go to prison and you know it, but my hands are tied. I've never seen so bad a record for driving offences. You have a complete disregard for the law.

“You have been assessed very carefully and now I have had a letter from the prison to say that the medical services there simply could not cope with you, so what can I do?”

32-YEAR CRIME SPREE

Bracken’s record of car crime dates back to when he was only 14.

The Daily Mail reports Bracken’s last conviction was in 2009, when he was sent to prison for four months for driving while disqualified. He was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was disqualified from driving for five years.

After the latest case, Bracken said: “I won't be driving again. My condition has deteriorated and I am now paralysed on one side.”

The court heard his estranged wife has given up her job to look after him 24 hours a day.
