Disco best 4x4 in online poll

Land Rover has once again topped the annual What Car? automotive awards in Britain, this time with its Discovery 4 and new Evoque.

The Disco was named '4x4 of the Year' - its seventh consecutive What Car? trophy - and the Evoque took the Readers' Award for the most exciting car of 2011. The votes came from the magazine's internet users.

The Solihull-built Discovery 4 was pitched against competition that included BMW's X3 and Hyundai's Santa Fe but What Car? described the car as "iconic".

It was the latest in a long list of accolades for Land Rover's most capable all-rounder and took the medal haul to almost 150 awards since the Discovery 2 was launched in 2004.

What Car?'s editor-in-chief, Steve Fowler, commented: "We've loved the Discovery ever since we made it Car of the Year in 2005 and this is its seventh What Car? award – an amazing feat. Nothing can beat its 4x4 ability that's combined with executive-car quality and family-friendly features – it’s a real iconic car."

NEW FEATURES COMING

Land Rover's global operations director, John Edwards had similar views: "The Discovery 4 offers an exceptional breadth of capability and has become one the of the world's most decorated vehicles. We're thrilled that it has once again been named '4x4 of the Year'. Seven What Car? awards is an amazing achievement and validates the Discovery's status as the world's most capable SUV."

2011 will see the Discovery 4 benefit from a host of new features, among them a new version of the 3.0 LR-TDV6 as the new entry-level engine choice for customers in some markets. The acclaimed parallel sequential turbodiesel engine will replace the 2.7 LR-TDV6 and match the low CO2 emissions and fuel economy of its more powerful three-litre stablemate

MOST EXCITING:: Well, that's how readers of What Car?'s website described the upcomiing Evoque.

Othar new year enhancements will include improvements to Land Rover's award-winning Terrain Response system with the introduction of hill-start assistance and "gradient acceleration control".

The Readers' Award for the most exciting car of 2011, as voted for by users of whatcar.com, is he first major award for the Range Rover Evoque and, Land Rover says, is a sure sign of the momentum building around the groundbreaking new Range Rover.

The Evoque will go on sale later in 2011, bringing what was the Land Rover LRX concept car into production reality, faithfully capturing the original design of the landmark cross-coupe concept. The vehicle, to be assembled at Land Rover's award-winning Halewood plant, was the hands-down winner of the award.

Fowler commented: "The Evoque was the runaway winner of this year's Readers' Award and it's easy to see why. It really impressed us when we first saw it in 2010 with its combination of style, quality and eco credentials. If the drive lives up to those sensational looks, it'll be a sure hit."

The Evoque will be available in coupe and five-door body styles but both will have bold design, premium levels of craftsmanship, luxury and performance. The Evoque, Land Rover says, will be the lightest, most fuel-efficient Range Rover yet, delivering fuel economy of less than five litres/100km and CO2 emissions below 130g/km.
