Four high school pupils were killed when a speeding car smashed into them in Soweto on Monday, Johannesburg emergency services said.

The four boys, aged between 17 and 19, were walking home from school with two other friends in Mdlalose Street, Protea North at around 4pm when the accident happened, spokesman Percy Morokane said.

Johannesburg metro police spokeswoman, Inspector Edna Mamonyane said two Mini Coopers were racing down the road, which runs between Protea Glen and Protea North.

"It is a two-way street and one of the cars went into the other lane, driving in the lane of oncoming traffic, parallel to one another."

Swerved and crashed

When a car came from the other direction, the driver tried to swerve back into the right lane and crashed into the Mini he was allegedly racing.

"They both drove onto the pavement and mowed down the four young boys who were still in school uniform," Mamonyane said.

Morokane said four of the boys were killed. The other two were in critical conditions with multiple fractures and head injuries.

Local ward councillor and Inkatha Freedom Party Soweto leader, Dlangezwa Mvelase, said that the community was "very angry" over the death of the four boys.

"The law must deal accordingly with people who play silly games on the roads, killing innocent children," said Mvelase.

Drivers arrested

Three of the boys killed were from Jules High School in the Johannesburg CBD and one from Altmont High School in Protea North.

Soweto police spokesman Inspector Kay Makhubela said the two drivers were arrested following the accident and that they will appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The two drivers will be facing charges of culpable homicide and negligent and reckless driving.

Whats scary about this is that JUB JUB is going to get some notoriety out of this and he'll probably sell some records. I wish him luck in prison, we don't need people like this in our society!!!

I am utterly disgusted and horrified to know that anyone, despite their pathetic celebrity status, is capable of such acts to display their clearly feeble masculinity. Go to jail where the other 'real' men will put you in your place.

One of the biggest problems is people of South Africa don't fear the Law. Natal and the Western Cape are starting to get it right. There is not enough visible policing. The traffic officers in general are not dedicated. Its merely a job in which to recieve a salary. The proper policing should not only happen over the holiday season , but all year round. There needs to be more trained personel, and not just these guys who sit behind bushes and under bridges bring in revenue .

first of all, the children of south africa must learn to keep of the streets, and out of the roads, and second these two assholes sould be give the death penalty, but why? it is this wonderfull goverment that allows things like this to happen, and to do NOTHING about this, dont be mad, you've voted for them take it like a man!!!

they should be given 40years in jail and also no bail should be given to any of the drivers, it doen't matter wether it is a celebrity or not. please .on top of that they were drunk....racing in one way road, thats a risk to other peoples life. I REPEAT NO BAIL SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THOSE DRIVERS.

I agree that an example should be made of these drivers but I expect the usual "lost" or "tainted blood samples" or some other excuse for the samples to not be admissible in court will be used and these guys will get off with a monetary fine that has no comparison to the crime and is only a slap on the wrists. I read how the parents reacted to the news and to seeing their kids dead in the grass, SO sad, this is a horrendous accident and a type that is all too common on our lawless roads. I don't know how SA traffic officials can sleep at night when they know how little they do for their communities.

Easy to say let them rot....Eish....its tough kodwa...I mean one wrong move on a monday afternoon and you are in deep kak.....Its a lesson for the rest of us....I'm never racing on the streets again if things can turn this sour.

According to another publication (the information is public) the one driver was some drol called 'Jub Jub', a so called south african wannabee rapper, who complained as if he is Paris Hilton in Survivor because he picked up some strange rash on his peepee, probably from putting it somewhere where it shouldn't have been. Where Jub Jub is going he can expect to catch lots more rashes and other far worse afflictions. Good. Serves him right. I'll have a cold beer the day he is sentenced and toast him on his way to prison. My sympathies to those families affected by this. Absolutely no sympathies to some drol called Jub Jub. The public wants justice. The prosecutors better not mess this one up.

My condolences to the families, may God comfort you and bless the souls of your children. Secondly, these are probably the same drivers who jump red lights, this seems to be a new sport in SA, come on guys red means stop, amber means slow down and get ready to stop not speed up to beat it, are you plain stupid or just colour blind?

@Metalhead yup its the same idiot!...the one who was crying like a little beaaatch cos he had a cut on his foot and some rash on his penis. Well let's hope he gets put behind bars, da least of his worries will be his winky rash

If these guys don't get 20 - life then there's something wrong with our legal system. Those families have lost something that can not be replaced.

They have to pay for their crimes. Why would they race at 4 pm when the streets are full of people? I thought race tracks were for racing; this is inexcusable, racing on public roads is not on...the risk is just too high regardless of your driving skills, i dont even bother with this robot to robot thing anymore...too many things can go wrong in a split second and then you are in deed crap...thats if you not dead.

This is crazy!!!!! How can someone be so careless. what about the poor childrens families. I hope the men driving the cars will be sent to prison for ever with no bail nothing. I hope the police will see how careless some driver's can be. Where are the metro police? I do not see a lot of them on the roads anymore probably sipping coffee at Mug and Bean.

Firstly, these where drunk stupid people, lock them away for life, but being SA they would bribe someone to get free. hand them over to the comunity to sort out. and at Mr. BMW, there is nothing wrong with MINI's they are quick cars and fun to drive, and like any other fast car a danger to other when in the hands of dumb people.

3/9/2010 10:44 AM
Outrageous!!! traffic cops should be patrollingthe back streets for this kind of maniacs instead of collecting taxes behind bushes. What were these thugs thinking to race MINI's, no access to better cars? No wonder one of them got frustrated and tried something this silly.

@Sphumelele I agree with you even murder is a lenient charge for these irresponsible drunks. Why do celebs think they are always above the law? It is time to make a example of them, let the law give them the full and most harsh sentence available. If these criminals have lost a child or someone close to them this will never happen. Maybe let the parents of the deceased get hold of them.

Everyone likes a bit of robot to robot now and then... But dammit guys this is too much! How can one drive in the wrong lane while doing so!!! I say let the drivers rot in jail!!! Or give them the death penalty

Totally outrageous; I hope they lock the drivers away for life - I heard they were also under the influence of alchohol. Why is it these idiots always manage to walk away from such accidents with only minor injuries whilst the innocents get maimed or die??

if i drive and my tyre goes pop and i kill someone, thats culpable homicide. if however i race istead of drive and im on the wrong lane on purpose lets call it murder.
