City clamps down on illegal racers

Cape Town City Traffic Services said on Tuesday it had carried out successful operations against drag racers in Athlone and Bellville.

"Close to 2 000 fines were issued for various offences including speeding, unlicensed motor vehicles and unlicensed drivers which is
an enormous breakthrough in our fight against... drag racing," said spokesman for the City Traffic Services Mogammat Mustapha.

Efforts to eradicate the illegal act included "blitz road blocks" in selected hotspots from 8pm to 4am.

"Six-hundred-and-sixty-two speeding offences were also captured with the highest speed recorded at 192 km/h in a 60 km/h zone and
driving at such high speeds is not only reckless, but also endangers the lives of other road users," said Mustapha.

The City Traffic Services said it would continue to intensify operations and to carry out blitz operations in its bid to rid the city of drag racing.
