Johannesburg - The government is considering making third party insurance for motorists compulsory, but the project is still in its early stages.
Chief director of road transport regulation, John Motsatsing, said the project was still in its "brainstorming" stage, reported Business Day newspaper.
Transport Minister S'bu Ndebele said in reply to a question in Parliament on Thursday that the government is looking into it, but it would require careful consideration.
Between 65% and 70% of the estimated 9.4mil on SA roads do not have third party insurance, reported Beeld newspaper.
Ndebele said his department would first have to draw up a strategy which would take into account the financial status of vehicle owners and the existing fuel levy.
