Big talk but 16 more die on roads

How many more must die before the killers among us who masquerade as taxi and bus drivers are brought to heel?

Another 16 people, including six more children, were killed and 84 people injured in two accidents in Limpopo on Thursday.

KILLED ON IMPACT

Nine people were killed and five injured when a taxi and a bus collided head-on in Northam on Thursday afternoon, paramedics reported

The taxi driver and four passengers apparently died on impact, four of those trapped in the wreckage died while paramedics were trying to free them and five seriously injured passengers were taken to a private hospital in Rustenburg.

Nobody on the bus was hurt and the cause of the crash is being investigated.

Earlier in the day, six pre-school children and an adult were killed and 79 children and adults hurt when their bus overturned in Siloam, near Thohoyandou, Limpopo police said.

DOWNHILL SMASH

The bus was carrying children and their parents from Khakhu village when the driver lost control of the vehicle on a downhill bend at 3.30am, police said. The vehicle left the road and overturned.

The national transport department has claimed that at least 210 unroadworthy school buses have been taken off the road so far in September and more than 430 drivers of public transport vehicles were arrested in the same period for various alleged traffic offences, mainly involving overloading and alcohol.
