Bail for 'babies-in-car' mum

JOHANNESBURG - A 34-year-old woman who allegedly left her two children ine a locked car at a shopping centre has been released on R2000 bail, police said on Tuesday.

Shelly Khumalo will return to the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on January 9, 2012, said Captain Shado Mashobane.

The woman was arrested on Thursday, December 8, 2011, at the River Square Mall in Three Rivers, Vereeniging, and charged with child neglect, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

CAR GUARDS ALERT

Mashobane said Khumalo arrived at the shopping centre with four children at 2pm, leaving a six-month-old baby and two-year-old toddler in the car.

Car guards alerted paramedics who had to break a window of her black BMW to rescue the two severely dehydrated children, who were also struggling to breathe.

Khumalo returned and allegedly hit a police officer when she saw the broken window.

The children were taken to Midvaal Hospital for a medical check-over and were later released to their father and grandmother.
